Goal setting is a wonderful thing to do. It gets you motivated and excited for the potential of the future. Quite often though, goal setting is just that, initial excitement and motivation followed by lackluster effort and disappointment for not achieving said goal.
Too many goals are lost to the void and it’s our goal to change that (pun intended). That's where the RDA system comes in - a practical approach to goal setting designed to turn your aspirations into achievements.
Results: Define Your Destination
This step is simple… What is the result you want? Be specific. Rather than vague aspirations like "I want to be healthier," set concrete goals such as "I want to run a marathon in 6 months." Specific goals provide a clear target to aim for and enable you to track your progress effectively. Break down your overarching goal into smaller milestones, creating a roadmap to success. For instance, if I wanted to run a marathon in 6 months, I may need to be able to run a half in 4 months, plus by doing the half marathon I give myself a little motivational boost towards that final goal.
Drivers: Find Your Why
Identifying your motivations - your "why" - is crucial to sustaining momentum and overcoming obstacles. Ask yourself why you want to achieve your goal. What will it mean for you? How will it impact your life? Attach emotion to your goal by connecting it to your values, aspirations, and personal aspirations. For example, "I want to lose weight to be a positive role model for my family and enjoy a healthier, more active lifestyle with them."
Actions: Take Purposeful Steps
With your goal and motivations clear, it's time to take action. Break inertia by asking yourself, "What can I do in the next 24 hours to move closer to my goal?" Focus on small, achievable actions that align with your desired outcome. Each action should contribute to your progress and reinforce your commitment. Whether it's signing up for a race, scheduling a workout, or meal-prepping for the week, every step counts.
Now armed with the RDA system, you have a powerful framework for setting and achieving your goals - both big and small. Remember, clarity breeds focus, motivation fuels progress, and action drives results. Happy goal setting!
